George R. Dixon,outstanding citizen of East Elmhurst/Corona Queens, believes that for a community to be strong and functional, its inhabitants must be active in the development of community activities that will enhance and ensure the quality of life for all its residents. George has proven this philosophy by his eager participation in numerous organizations.
George R. Dixon, aka, “Jamel,” a former U.S. Air Force Electronic Communications & Avionics Specialist and Telecommunication Engineer, presently owner of “Minds of Production,” an art & design, graphics, full service printing, photography and video production company and curator, was born in Queens, New York.
His extensive travels, with his wife Gloria, have given him the opportunity to photograph and video exotic locations and various cultures, and to acquire numerous artifacts that have been displayed and shown in several galleries, libraries and schools. When George is not lecturing about the different cultures using his photographs, videos and artifacts, he is giving free photography workshops to children and adults.
Mr. Dixon has exceptional problem solving abilities. If an organization is “floundering” and needs a spark to continue, George is one of the first in the community to be called upon. He has revitalized many organizations and has improved the morale of its members.
Mr. Dixon was the Liaison Officer and Vice President of the Flushing Meadow Soap Box Derby. He assisted in organizing the annual Derby Races which are held in East Elmhurst and has served as the Acting Derby Director at the American Soap Box Derby held in Akron, Ohio.
Mr. Dixon is an Executive Board Member of the; East Elmhurst/Corona Civic Association; NAACP Corona/East Elmhurst Chapter and also Freedom Fund Chairperson, 2nd Vice President, Golden Life Member, Diamond Member; member of the Library Action Committee of Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center; President of Frederick Douglass Democratic Association; member at large of the Friends of East Elmhurst Library; Past District Deputy Grand High Priest, HRAM, State of New York; Past Worshipful Master of Trinity Lodge #51; Past District Deputy Grand Master; past member of Community Board #3; Distinguished Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Corona East Elmhurst, and was Lieut. Governor Elect Of Queens West Division, but declined the post in order to serve other community activities.
George has created a “George R. Dixon Scholarship” which he presents to a local graduating high school student who will be attending college.
Mr. Dixon not only devotes his time and gives of himself to the community, but he also donates many printing needs to the various community organizations and churches.
Presently, Mr. Dixon is the District Leader for the 35th Assembly District,Part A, and the community hopes that he will continue further in the political arena.
Many have said that Mr. Dixon is truly a leader of leaders. A person who will always get the job done.
Mr. Dixon has received numerous awards, citations and proclamations from political leaders and organizations for his community services, which some of them are: Community Service Awards from Elmcor Youth & Adult Activities, Key Women of America, Inc. Concourse Village Branch; Business Awards from East Elmhurst Civic Association, NAACP, and citations and proclamations from Queens Borough Presidents Claire Shulman and Helen Marshall, Councilwoman Helen Sears, and several other political leaders. He has appeared in Newsday Queens Life Profile and was featured as a “Everyday Hero” with his wife Gloria, also by Newsday.
George R. Dixon believes that we should always help our children to help themselves.
